On July 8, 2008, the beehive collective held it's first Financial Literacy workshop at the YWCA. We had fifteen young women and men in attendance who learned some of the basics about managing money and planning for our future. Stay tuned for future financial assistance workshops. If you have ideas for future topics/presenters, please email us at buzz@thebeehivecollective.org.
On August 8, 2008, the beehive collective held a special Beers with the Bees at Cafe 101. Special guests, Kevin O'Barr and
Greg Moore, performed their wonderfully entertaining piano bar/cabaret
act. Kevin and Greg are well known for their hilarious renditions of
show tunes and popular music. With over 50 supportive individuals in attendance we raised over $200.
On August 19, 2008, we held our second financial literacy workshop on investing responsibly. Thanks to Darron Stover for leading this session, with fifteen young folks in attendance.
September 28, 2008 The September Swarm The beehive collective hosted a fundraiser, The September Swarm, at Loft 135. The event raised close to $900 and included a silent auction of local works of art, spinning by DJ KrazeeRock and Neu Romance friends, and hopping beats by What's Their Name. Thanks to all of the local artists who donated their works of art, our musicians, and friends who came out to support the bees and our 2008 theme: Economic Security.
October 15, 2008 Beehive Book Club
The beehive collective's theme
committee has started a beehive book club! The first meeting of the book club was on October 15 at The Landmark. The goal of the book club is to educate ourselves on how economic
disparities are effecting us locally and nationally. For more information on the beehive book club, email us at buzz@thebeehivecollective.org! November 17, 2008 Panel on Poverty Issues The beehive collective held an informational Panel on Poverty Issues at the YWCA. Our guest panelists included experts from
Urban Ministries, Action for Children NC, and the YWCA of the Greater
Triangle. The panel was informative as we get ready to decide on which organization gets our first grant. On December 8 the beehive collective held its last Membership Meeting of 2008 at Cafe 101. At this meeting, we voted for our 2008 beneficiary. The winner: Passage Home! The beehive collective gave over $9,000 to Passage Home for their "Just
Greening Communities" initiative, which combines the development of
affordable housing with workforce development activities. Ongoing: Beers with the Bees Next location and date TBD A regular happy hour with some of the Queen Bees. Join us to learn more about how to get involved with the beehive collective,
