The Beehive’s first grant of $10,000 was awarded to Passage Home in 2008, which helps families achieve self-sufficiency through programs designed to break the cycle of poverty.

The funds from the Beehive Collective were used for the workforce development component of Passage Home’s Just Greening Communities project. This project is a collaboration of several for profit and nonprofit organizations in North Carolina. The main objective is to develop and pilot a model of green-collar job implementation that can be replicated throughout the state by community-based organizations.

Passage Home used the fund to help four neighborhood residents with de-construction “green job” training. As a result, they were able to hire and train four people to deconstruct two homes. Passage home partnered with Habitat for Humanity to offer the training and to save as many building materials as possible for reuse and recycling.
